About 18 months after Terry and Laura Sheldon's twin daughters die in a flash flood, they take in foster child Alfred, a 10-year-old African-American boy who has already been shuttled from one foster home to another. The Sheldons try to break through the shell he has built for himself, but he has been rejected so often that he is always wary and distant. There's the added burden of being a black child in the almost all-white world of Vermont _ it's disorienting, to say the least.

Alfred hopes he will be able to stay with Laura and Terry longer thanthe few months he was in other foster homes, but his silences make Terry leery. Even Laura, who takes to the boy and ...
