Jean Auel wrote the popular series featuring the life and times of cavewoman Ayla as she ventures among the various first peoples of Europe. "The Clan of the Cave Bear" (1980), "The Valley of Horses" (1982), "The Mammoth Hunters" (1986) and "The Plains of Passage" (1990) all are part of the "Earth's Children" series.
The first two volumes were runaway bestsellers and garnered respectful reviews; the third and fourth were savaged by critics as nothing more than romance novels decked out in animal skins instead of frilly negligees. Perhaps as a result of such response, Auel hasn't offered a new "Earth's Children" novel in more than a decade.
