DALLAS _ Last month, the Philadelphia Inquirer whittled away at its four-page book review section.

It's now the book page. Uno. One. Three-quarters gone.

In the past year, similar amputations have happened to newspapers in Seattle, Boston, San Jose, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta _ even New York City.

Yes, in The Dallas Morning News as well. Book-related columns and stories still appear in almost every section daily, but two years ago, we used to run six to eight full-size reviews on Sunday. Now, because of changes throughout the paper, it's four to five.

OK, so it's a tough time for the media. Mergers, rising costs, weak ad revenue, the need to placate stockholders with high returns. Everybody's hurting: Why should book coverage be any different?
