ATLANTA _ The last time the lights _ and the nation's eyes _ shone on Bobby Dodd Stadium, Joe Burns was caught in the intense glare.
Thursday night, Burns took the spotlight and ran with it, literally.
The Georgia Tech tailback set a career-high with 198 yards on a career-high tying 34 carries, including a 51-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that proved to be the clincher, as the No. 23 Yellow Jackets topped No. 22 North Carolina 28-21 before a sellout home crowd.
His performance stood in stark contrast to the dismal showing he had just three weeks ago in another ESPN nationally televised Thursday nighter against Maryland. In that one, the 5-foot-10, 205-pound juniors was limited to 57 yards on 20 carries, fumbled twice and drew the wrath of not only Tech coach George O'Leary, but the Jackets' faithful for running out of bounds as Tech tried to run out the clock.
The mental mistake likely cost the Jackets the game, as the Terrapins rallied to tie the game late in the fourth quarter and won it in overtime.
"I took that game harder than a lot of people," Burns said. "My thing is being consistent and I lost consistency that game. In every game since, I've wanted to come out with a purpose, run hard and break tackles. You can't dwell on things that happened, you have to move on."
Burns got his point across. Emphatically.
