WALNUT CREEK, Calif. _ News that terrorists may target West Coast bridges generated widespread concern in the Bay Area, where two of the world's most famous spans carry thousands of people every day.
Many commuters, toll-takers, truckers and even the tow truck drivers that patrol the Bay and Golden Gate bridges in search of stalled vehicles expressed anxiety in the wake of Gov. Gray Davis' late afternoon announcement.
Employers, meanwhile, sent out notices suggesting workers who commute come in late or early, telecommute or take BART or a ferry. Some even gave permission for workers to take vacation or a personal day if they felt too afraid to come to work.
