KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Nearly 250 persons are taking antibiotics as health officials await confirmation Friday on whether anthrax spores have invaded a Kansas City stamp center.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is growing cultures from samples taken in the Stamp Fulfillment Services center in Kansas City, North. An initial test proved positive for the bacteria.
If the tests confirm anthrax, the fulfillment center must be decontaminated and will become part of the widening criminal investigation of biological terrorism.
District Postal Manager Ormer Rogers Jr. said Thursday the main Kansas City processing and distribution center at 17th Street and Cleveland Avenue was one of 200 facilities around the country that also will be tested for anthrax. That is a precaution because of the volume of mail it handles, but he said there was no reason to suspect contamination.
Health officials in Kansas City on Thursday interviewed at least 246 persons who either worked in the Northland stamp center or visited it recently. None reported alarming symptoms. The Health Department still was trying Thursday evening to reach 10 postal workers.
"No one who went through that screening process was thought to be at an increased risk," Rex Archer, Kansas City health director, said at a news conference Thursday. "We have not had to send anyone off for diagnostic testing."
