PHILADELPHIA _ It was less than five months ago that the building was hopping, overflowing with delirious 76ers fans hoping for an inconceivable upset of the Los Angeles Lakers, but, deep down, thrilled to have their team in the NBA Finals.
That Sixers team had accomplished so much, starting the season 10-0, clutching the league's best record through much of the regular season. Then, as the top seed in the Eastern Conference, it beat Indiana in four games, hung on to beat Toronto in seven, then Milwaukee in seven to win the conference and return to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1983.
