KANSAS CITY _ Jason Brookins could hardly stand it as he watched last season's AFC championship game at home on Buchanan Street in the central Missouri town of Mexico.
Those were his teammates on the screen, playing in the uniforms he wore, and they were running the plays he practiced while spending the 2000 season with both the Baltimore Ravens' and Oakland Raiders' practice squads.
Brookins felt anger and envy. And he was resolute.
"Next year," Brookins promised his grandparents and daughter, Jaselle. "Next year has to be my year."
Brookins made good on his vow. He re-signed with the Ravens in February after they won the Super Bowl. He refined on his skills with the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe.
And taking advantage of a season-ending knee injury to Jamal Lewis, Brookins not only made the Baltimore roster this season, but he started and rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown in the Ravens' 18-17 victory against Jacksonville last week.
"I think I did better than anybody expected me to do, except for myself," said Brookins, a powerful 6-foot-2, 240-pounder who may have lacked an opportunity last year but never lost his confidence.
