DETROIT _ The federal government will pay to nearly double the Michigan National Guard force stationed at the state's three border crossings with Canada, a spokesman for Gov. John Engler said Thursday.
The new contingent of 46 soldiers is expected to boost security at the crossings and help relieve fatigued agents who have been working 12- and 14-hour shifts.
In recent weeks, traffic delays at the borders have been greatly reduced, in part because of the 54 National Guard soldiers previously assigned to help inspect commercial cargo.
