WASHINGTON _ The United States is intensifying the war on the Taliban and Osama bin Laden by sending more special forces to aid opposition groups and advanced surveillance aircraft, including a new robot spy plane, officials said Thursday.
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said he wants a three- to four-fold increase "as soon as humanly possible" in the number of U.S. commando teams advising United Front guerrillas and guiding air strikes on Taliban front lines. Efforts to supplement the 100 to 200 U.S. soldiers now on the ground have been hampered by poor weather and, in one case, intense Taliban gunfire at a helicopter bringing them in, Rumsfeld said at a news conference.
Other defense officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Pentagon has ordered the deployment of E-8C Joint Stars, modified Boeing 707s that can simultaneously track dozens of enemy targets and direct attacks on them by ground or air forces.
