WASHINGTON _ The anthrax that killed a New York hospital worker is "indistinguishable" from the deadly bacteria that has surfaced elsewhere, medical investigators said Thursday.
Investigators were no closer, however, to solving the baffling mystery of how Kathy T. Nguyen became infected.
The 61-year-old woman has proven the most puzzling of the 17 confirmed anthrax infection cases to date because she is the only victim with no apparent linkage to anthrax-laced letters or the postal system. The Vietnamese immigrant died Wednesday, the fourth casualty in a month-old bioterrorism crisis.
"So far, we have found no clues to suggest that the mail or mail handling per se was the source of her exposure," said Dr. Julie Gerberding, an infectious diseases expert with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."
