Microsoft Corp. appears to have beaten back the federal government's three-year antitrust campaign against the software maker if terms of a tentative agreement become final, analysts and other industry watchers said Thursday.
However, the settlement is not a done deal because some state attorneys general who had joined the landmark case object. They are expected to ask for more time to write a reply, and they continued to urge Justice Department lawyers Thursday to demand tighter restrictions on Microsoft's business practices.
Microsoft critics blasted the reported terms of the tentative agreement, saying the company would be getting off too easily.
