DALLAS _ UAL Corp., parent of United Airlines Inc., said Thursday it lost $1.16 billion in the third quarter as revenues dropped, costs rose and write-offs mounted after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
By itself, UAL's quarterly loss would have marked the fifth worst year in the U.S. airline industry's history _ for all airlines combined.
UAL's huge losses made Delta Air Lines Inc.'s $262 million loss, also announced Thursday, seem mild by comparison, even though it was the first third quarter loss reported by Delta in nine years and one of its worst quarterly losses ever.
The earnings reports from UAL, the nation's second largest airline, and No. 3 Delta came on the same day that rating agency Fitch issued a pessimistic prediction about the recovery of the airline industry.
