RICHMOND, VA _ A new poll shows Republican Mark L. Earley fading in the home stretch of the Virginia governor's race and suggests his aggressive campaign tactics are backfiring.

The Daily Press-WAVY News 10 poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research Inc., gives Democrat Mark R. Warner a lead of 6 percentage points, 48 percent to 42 percent, with 9 percent undecided and 1 percent for Libertarian Bill Redpath. Warner's lead is beyond the poll's 4 percent margin of error.

Two weeks ago, the same pollsters showed Warner ahead by 3 percentage points, with the same margin of error, making the race a statistical dead heat. Mason-Dixon Polling and Research Inc. has conducted polls throughout the race for the Daily Press and other …
