MIAMI _ NBA Commissioner David Stern said he didn't come to the Heat's season opener against Toronto on Wednesday night at AmericanAirlines Arena to give the Heat or owner Micky Arison an award for the way the organization is run.

But he praised the Heat's advances in the league despite the challenges of remaining fiscally responsible in a budget-tightening era.

``In terms of the basketball side of the operation, there is probably no one as intense and as committed a person as Pat Riley has been,'' Stern said in a press conference before the Heat faced the Raptors.
