PPG Industries (Pittsburgh) has been awarded EPA's Green Chemistry Challenge Award for its Enviro-Prime 2000 cationic electrodeposition coatings for the automotive industry. Yttrium replaces lead in these coatings.

Nominated in the Designing Safe r Chemicals Category, Enviro-Prime 2000 coatings contain no heavy metals and significantly reduce emissions of VOCs. In addition, these lead-free, anticorrosion e-coat products enable automakers to eliminate chrome from rinses and use low-nickel or potentially nickel-free pretreatments.
