ORLANDO, Fla. _ Fully armed and dressed in battle fatigues, some 400 members of the Florida National Guard will take up posts by noon Friday at the state's 19 major airports.
Training with Federal Aviation Administration officials will begin Wednesday and should conclude the following day, said Air Force Major Ron Tittle of the National Guard.
He would not discuss in detail what Guard members will be taught, saying, "They will be extra eyes and ears to observe, just extra backup."
President Bush called last week for the National Guard to patrol the nation's 420 commercial airports in an effort to encourage flying.
Air travel has dropped dramatically since Sept. 11, when terrorists hijacked four jumbo jets and slammed them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington. The fourth jet crashed into the Pennsylvania countryside.
As many as 6,000 people have been killed in the attacks or are missing.
In Florida, Guard members likely will spend much of their time at airport screening areas, where travelers' bags are checked for contraband.
