DAVIE, Fla. _ After the media criticized the Miami Dolphins' defense for a lousy pass rush in last Sunday's 42-10 loss at St. Louis, coach Dave Wannstedt used that same medium to get across a message to his front four.
"Our defensive line is being questioned as far as putting pressure on and rushing the passer," Wannstedt said during his Monday news conference. "That's fine. If we're going to be the type of team and defense that we expect to be, we've got to step up and meet that challenge."
That means trying to earn redemption in Sunday's home game against New England.
The Dolphins (2-1) failed to register a sack against the Rams (3-0) and only have four for the entire season. In comparison, the Dolphins had 13 sacks after their first three games last season.
While the defensive line did a solid job in victories against Tennessee and Oakland, the lack of pressure against Kurt Warner was a major reason the Rams quarterback skewered the unit for 328 passing yards and four touchdowns on 24-of-31 passing.
"There's no excuse for having a guy back there with enough time to throw like we let Warner do," said left defensive end Kenny Mixon, who failed to register a tackle against St. Louis. "We've just got to put more pressure. It all starts up front with us.
"It's just one of those games where that ball started rolling downhill and we couldn't stop it. Everything was going their way and we just couldn't seem to make a play and get anything going in our way. It was just a terrible game for us. There was just no excuse for that."
