According to the London-based World Travel & Tourism Council, travel and tourism accounts for $4.5 trillion in global activity annually, as much as $1.4 trillion in U.S. economic activity and about 17 million U.S. jobs _ or did until the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

Now, the entire travel industry is in transition. Some of the practices that have become familiar are in flux and will continue to be in the weeks and months ahead, while others, at least for the moment, remain in place.
