PEORIA, Ill. _ In life, as at the blackjack table, you have to play the cards you're dealt.
So when a plan to meet a friend fell through on a recent weekend and I found myself alone in Peoria, it was time to make my own fun. Peoria, the fifth largest city in Illinois with 112,936 people, has all the nightlife attractions you would expect to find in a bona fide city. But it's also a prairie town, and you don't have to go far to get back to nature. The wildlife _ and wild life _ in this west-central Illinois river town were more than I expected to find.
