GETTING THERE:
Parke County, Indiana, is about 210 miles from Chicago. Take Interstate Highway 90/94 South to Interstate Highway 57 South. Exit I-57 at Interstate Highway 74 East. At U.S. Highway 41, go south to Rockville. As you get closer tune your car radio to WAXI 104.9 FM for festival information.
THE FESTIVAL:
This year's Parke County Covered Bridge Festival is Oct. 12-21 and is centered in the historic downtown of Rockville, though there are activities throughout the county.
The county is 800 square miles, with 32 covered bridges and festivals of fun where you will find crafts and foods that will keep you interested and spending money for hours.
There are tour buses to the Covered Bridges, but you will find that if you venture out on your own you can easily find your way with the map available from tourism officials (see below).
Early morning, (with fewer people around), and late afternoon provide the right mood light for photographs of the covered bridges. The fall colors enchance the beauty of the magnificent covered bridge structures too.
