Founded in 1924, Delicato Vineyards' primary business for more than 60 years was providing grapes or wines for other wineries. But in the late 1980s, the family-owned company started producing its own world-class brands.

Most recently, the winery has made a splash with the release of Delicato Monterey Vine Select premium wines. Production is limited _ one white and two reds are being sold under the Vine Select name _ and it may take some effort to find the wines. But the search is worth it.

Consider the 1998 Delicato Monterey Vine Select Chardonnay, a delicious white with golden straw color, complex taste and a lingering finish. Rich in fruit flavors, this chardonnay is as food-friendly as a wine can be. Of the reds, the 1998 Delicato Monterey Vine Select Merlot is round and supple, with soft tannins and dominant fruit flavors. Ready to enjoy now, it also will improve with five or six more years of bottle aging. As good as the merlot is, my favorite red is the 1998 Delicato Monterey Vine Select Syrah. With its beautiful ruby-red color and forward fruit flavors, this syrah is perfect.

SERVE WITH: Enjoy the chardonnay with creamy soups, seafood bisque, chicken breast with tarragon, lobster or salmon. The merlot goes nicely with Cornish game hen, sweetbreads and lamb. The syrah is perfect with grilled meats, pasta with spicy red sauce or barbecued ...
