The classical-recording industry seems be taking its cue from Hollywood, with the independents emerging as a force to be reckoned with. These days, the major record labels are releasing fewer classical titles than ever, and those that are hitting the stores feature big-name artists almost exclusively, rather than up-and-comers. The CD boom, when serious collectors were furiously replacing their LPs, is now behind us, and the majors are retreating from an industry glutted with product and plagued by plummeting price points.
