"Sprawling" is probably the adjective most frequently applied to the city of Tulsa. At one point, it was thought to cover more area than any other city in the U.S., and this may account for the sense of dislocation a visitor feels when making his way into town from the airport. It's a little difficult to get a feeling for where the center of things is. In Tulsa, commercial buildings aren't necessarily butted up against each other. A flat, open area will suddenly be punctuated by a cluster of skyscrapers, like a grove of trees popping up on the prairie.
This is my first trip to Oklahoma, and I've promised myself that I won't succumb to the Easterner's cliche view ...
