Participation in sports is often seen as a good thing by most parents. In addition to offering children a chance to exercise, organized sports also give children the opportunity to socialize and take an active role in their health and self-image. But are sports really the be-all and end-all that some parents think?

The results are mixed, according to The Women's, Sports Foundation Report: "Health Risks and the Teen Athlete." Following are some of the findings:

1. Athletes are less likely to use illicit drugs. Female athletes were less likely than female non-athletes to use marijuana, cocaine or other drugs such as LSD, PCP or heroin.
