Foods that contain at least 10 percent of the Daily Value for potassium and less than 140 mg of sodium per serving are eligible to carry a new health claim. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has agreed to allow foods that meet certain criteria to state that: "Diets containing foods that are good sources of potassium and low in sodium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke."
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is the most prevalent cardiovascular disorder in the United States, affecting 24 percent of American adults.
