BLACKSBURG, Va. _ For the past week, Brian Welch has gotten angry every time he has clicked the television over to CNN. If the grisly images of destruction in New York City and Washington, D.C., weren't enough to make him sick to his stomach, the recurring theme of "America's New War" has done the trick.

Hanging a flag in the front window is nothing new for Welch, a senior linebacker for No. 9 Virginia Tech (2-0). Not since his father, Kenneth, a member of the U.S. Army, was killed in 1984 during a terrorist attack in Beirut. With a mother who works in the State Department, patriotism is a way of life for Welch, not just a sign of the times.
