Sep. 6--SACRAMENTO, Calif.--Californians who don't want to pick up the phone and hear a sales pitch could pay a buck to bar such calls under a bill that has broad support but faces fierce opposition from the state's major telephone companies.
The controversial bill, carried by Sen. Liz Figueroa, D-Fremont, would fine telephone solicitors if they contact people who put themselves on the proposed "Do Not Call" list.
The telemarketing reform legislation, which has died in two previous sessions, faces a crucial test as soon as today in the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
"Our citizens are saying `Please, please do something,' " Figueroa said. "Having the choice to be left alone in their own homes is not too much to ask."
