COLLEGE PARK, Md. _ North Carolina senior Ronald Curry doesn't want to play anything but quarterback, but freshman Darian Durant no longer is content to play the dutiful backup _ and UNC coach John Bunting is starting to waver, too.
After the Tar Heels dropped to 0-2 with a 23-7 loss Saturday at Maryland, Curry said he played well enough to start this week against Texas. Durant, who has posted superior numbers in two relief appearances, didn't agree.
"It's the coach's decision," Durant said. "That's all I can say."
That's more than he said after UNC's opening loss. After throwing for 152 yards and two touchdowns against Oklahoma, Durant said, "Ronald's still the man."
Curry was a marked man against Maryland (1-0), just as he had been against Oklahoma. And again, Curry didn't handle the pressure well: 6-for-12 for 61 yards and an interception.
Durant's numbers were better _ 10-for-14 for 97 yards _ and while he threw two interceptions, one bounced off receiver Sam Aiken. Plus, the team moved with Durant. With few exceptions, it stalled for Curry.
A week after calling Curry "my quarterback," Bunting backed his starter with less fervor.
