JOLIET, Ill. Jacques Lazier said he came to Chicagoland Speedway with no sense of pressure to perform. As far as he was concerned, Sunday's Delphi Indy 300 was simply the next to last tuneup for the 2002 season.
Even his team owner bet against him in a friendly wager with Eddie Cheever Jr.
But Saturday afternoon, Lazier lived up to the promise many expect from him, winning the pole position in his first-ever qualifying effort for Team Menard.
"The pole was definitely a bonus," said Lazier, who replaced former Indy Racing League champion Greg Ray on Aug. 15. "We've been together for one race, there is no pressure.
