PHILADELPIHA _ The final month of the season has arrived, and as the weather cools down, the pennant races are heating up.
The return to the unbalanced schedule means several of these races will be decided the way they should be, in head-to-head play.
Here's a look at the division races and what's left on the contending teams' schedules:
NL East: It's a two-team race between two imperfect teams, the Braves and the Phillies.
Phillies manager Larry Bowa described this race well when he said, "It's like nobody wants to win this division right now. Everybody is running in quicksand."
The Phillies entered Friday's game having lost 10 of 14. The Braves had lost seven of 11.
Atlanta has had problems producing runs all season. So glaring is their need for a bat that they signed 40-year-old Julio Franco out of the Mexican League on Friday.
