KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ The injury to Rangers catcher Ivan Rodriguez's left knee is much worse than originally believed, which could drastically alter the way the team negotiates a long-term contract with him, or diminish his value as a free agent after the 2002 season.
Rodriguez was a late scratch minutes before the start of the Rangers' 7-2 victory against the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.
"It's serious," Rangers trainer Danny Wheat said. "It's serious enough not to play him."
Rodriguez has patellar tendinitis in his left knee, and will return to the Fort Worth-Dallas area this morning to have a precautionary MRI _ his second in two weeks _ performed by team physician, Dr. John Conway.
