SEATTLE _ In baseball, September is the coolest month, a time to savor all the ebb and flow and angst of stretch-drive pennant chases.

In the National League, anyway. Eight NL teams have entered the final four weeks in heated contention for four playoff berths, with the added bonus of unbalanced schedules to (mostly) ensure head-to-head battles throughout the month.

As an example, the Braves and Phillies meet seven times in September, the Cardinals and Astros square off six times, and the Astros and Cubs meet seven times, all in the final 10 days, including a season-ending four game series at Wrigley Field.
