MIAMI _ A federal judge's ruling to uphold a ban on gay adoptions has inflamed passions _ with some people hailing it as a victory for family values and others denouncing it as an attack on gay men and lesbians.
That discord is sharpest when it comes to interpreting the actual legal implications of the ruling issued by U.S. District Judge James Lawrence King on Thursday.
A now-apologetic lawmaker who helped pass the state statute banning adoptions by gays in 1977 says the judge was actually voicing disapproval of the law. The attorneys who filed the suit challenging the ban say the judge partly mischaracterized their position.
And at least one legal expert says King was hamstrung.
