GAINESVILLE, Fla. _ OK, let me get this straight.
Rex Grossman throws for 343 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, stakes No. 1 Florida to a five-touchdown lead, does pretty much everything you could want from a sophomore quarterback. And one of the first things Steve Spurrier does after this 49-14 win over Marshall is to criticize him.
"He threw an interception on first down," Spurrier said. "You'd understand if it was third-and-20."
Sorry Coach, but I don't understand at all. How about a little praise for a 16-for-22 opening half, the only one that really counted in a pre-ordained opener that had all the meaning of an NFL exhibition? Why harp on an end-zone interception that came in the third quarter with the score 35-0?
Instead, Spurrier saved his praise for backup Brock Berlin, who went 5 for 8 for 55 yards with a touchdown in garbage time.
"Brock came in and threw some beautiful passes," Spurrier cooed.
OK, Spurrier threw a belated bone Grossman's way when on second reference he said, "I'm very proud of the receivers and Rex and Brock throwing the ball. They threw it and caught it pretty doggone well. It was a good throw-and-catch night for our guys."
