STATE COLLEGE, Pa. _ Would two new starting defensive ends pose any major problems for Miami on Saturday night against Penn State?
Not at all. In fact, Andrew Williams and Jerome McDougle made some impressive plays in their first Division I football appearances.
Williams started in place of Jamaal Green, who missed time this fall with a sprained left knee. McDougle started in place of Cornelius Green, who has been suffering from turf toe on his right foot.
Both made an early impact. McDougle broke up two Matt Senneca passes and also forced a fumble. Williams, meanwhile, had a sack for a 10-yard loss and also had a crucial stop on a third-and-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Though Jamaal Green did not start, he played extensively and also had a sack for a 10-yard loss. Cornelius Green did not play in the first half, and Coker said during the week he would only play in an emergency situation.
Because of the Hurricanes' depth at the position, defensive line coach Greg Mark never seemed worried.
In 1999, McDougle and Williams were teammates and starters at Hinds (Miss.) Junior College. McDougle arrived at UM for the 2000 season and redshirted. Williams enrolled at UM in January and was with the team for spring practice.
