STATE COLLEGE, Pa. _ Give the new guy credit. He knew just what to do, right from the first step of the first game in his first season as head coach.
Larry Coker led his University of Miami players onto the field Joe Paterno made famous Saturday night, ran a couple steps, and lovers of symbolism will appreciate what he did next.
He moved to the side.
He got out of the way.
The Hurricanes players, so fast, so talented and so very deep, sprinted past their coach onto center stage then and past Penn State's players the rest of the night. They looked ready to run all the way to Pasadena in the first half.
They turned this era-opener into an eye-opener. They made Paterno look more out of date than his flood-water pants. They allowed their first-time coach _ who allowed to passersby in the pregame locker room, "Man, I'm really nervous" _ to look as composed on the sideline as a still-life drawing.
The 33-7 final score doesn't register the rout. This night went so well for Miami, the plan worked so right, that when ABC's Lynn Swann asked what Coker was concerned about during one of those quickie interviews at half, the new Miami coach said they had to, "Watch that the referees call the celebration penalty so tightly."
