The football game Florida Atlantic University dreamed about for more than three years turned into a nightmare before the opening kickoff.
Minutes before the start of Saturday's game it was revealed that 13 FAU players, including seven starters, were ineligible and could not play.
With their fate essentially sealed by that news, a rattled Owls team was methodically destroyed by Slippery Rock 40-7 in the first game in FAU history.
Instead of being a fond memory, it is a game everyone, from players to fans, will want to forget as quickly as they can.
Slippery Rock was dominant everywhere, making an Owl team trying to establish the new football program look completely overmatched in front of an announced crowd of 25,632.
"I never expected it to be this bad," a somber coach Howard Schnellenberger said after the game that was never really a game.
It was 33-0 at half, though the outcome was really determined when the young team with little depth had to replace the seven starters.
