STATE COLLEGE, Pa. _ Clinton Portis dashed here and Ken Dorsey passed there, and the University of Miami ran everywhere Saturday night against Penn State.
What a start to a season so full of national championship hopes.
The second-ranked Hurricanes dominated the whole way, building a 30-0 halftime lead _ the largest first-half deficit at home for Penn State under Joe Paterno _ before prevailing 33-7 in front of a Beaver Stadium record-crowd of 109,313. It was the largest UM win against Penn State.
Coach Larry Coker also notched his first career victory.
Portis, who celebrated his 20th birthday Saturday, had 17 carries for a career-high 164 yards _ 94 of which came in the first quarter _ while Dorsey went 20 of 27 for a career-high 344 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. It also was Portis' seventh career 100-yard game and the best rushing performance by any UM back against Penn State.
"It was a very happy birthday for me," Portis said. "This was kind of my birthday present to myself. I knew the line was going to perform well, and I followed their lead. We had some big runs, mainly because every time I made a read the hole was there."
Though the Hurricanes entered the game as the ranked team, so many of the story lines this week focused on Penn State.
