ATLANTA_For a guy who was supposed to be nothing more than a pinch-hitter, Rondell White looked awfully fast on the bases Saturday.
"You still play the game hard," White said. "I'm not 100 percent but close to it. I'm surprised the way (the left groin) felt today. I really didn't feel anything. Hopefully it will stay that way."
Cubs manager Don Baylor had indicated that his preliminary plans were to use White as a right-handed bat off the bench. But Baylor decided to give White his first start since July 13 after the two spoke Friday night.
"He asked me if I was scared," White recalled. "I said, `I'm not scared. Throw me in there.'"
White was struck by a Greg Maddux fastball in his first at-bat. He singled off Maddux's glove in the fourth, sprinting to first base as if he were being chased.
When Ricky Gutierrez bounced a single up the middle, White hustled into third base, daring center fielder Andruw Jones to throw him out. He didn't.
