NEW YORK _ Chip. Charge. Volley.
It was more than a mantra for Pete Sampras. For one hour and 29 minutes it was a service-return necessity.
His motivation in question all season, and particularly since Wimbledon, Sampras seems determined to use the U.S. Open this fortnight to re-assert some semblance of dominance in men's tennis, and he took a giant step Saturday with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Russian prodigy Mikhail Youzhny.
He pushed himself hard to get to the net, to produce some constant movement and aggressiveness, and it paid off in a third-round win that sends him Monday into an early showdown against Patrick Rafter.
``I decided I'm just going to come in until the cows come home,'' said Sampras, who was at the net 80 times, and not just following his serves.
``Every second serve of his I saw, I was going to do something with it and be aggressive. I was coming in on both serves.''
This was supposed to be a tough first week for Sampras, sitting in the murderous fourth quadrant of the draw with Andre Agassi, Rafter and Roger Federer. But Sampras has made a shambles of his first three opponents.
