CHICAGO
The releases of several veteran players during the preseason were high-visibility indicators of general manager Jerry Angelo's approach to reshaping the Bears. The final wave of roster moves this weekend sharpens the focus of Angelo's vision.
Nine players were released Saturday, with at least three more cuts due Sunday in order to have the roster at 53 players by 3 p.m. Among Saturday's cuts were running back Marlon Barnes, defensive lineman Van Tuinei and guard Jerry Wisne, all of whom have started exhibition or regular-season games for the Bears.
The Bears, who still will look to pick up players cut by other teams, will go into the 2001 season with a roster that includes:
Eight defensive linemen, only two of whom_ends Phillip Daniels and Bryan Robinson_were in Bears uniforms when last season ended;
Three running backs and two fullbacks, only two of whom_James Allen and Scott Dragos_were Bears when they upset the Detroit Lions last Dec. 24;
Four backup offensive linemen with a combined total of nine NFL starts.
