FORT LAUDERDALE _ A nicked-up starting quarterback skipping a preseason finale isn't particularly noteworthy.
Unless it's Peyton Manning.
By missing Indianapolis' 23-17 exhibition victory over Cincinnati on Thursday because of a sprained right knee, Manning's streak of 150 consecutive starts that dated back to high school was snapped. Manning also missed his first practice because of injury last week since being sidelined with an ailing knee in 1997 before the University of Tennessee's Fed-Ex Orange Bowl loss to Nebraska.
"I'm kind of mad," said Manning, whose only missed NFL sessions came as part of a five-day contract holdout his rookie season. "I had a perfect practice streak going for three years and I broke it."
Actually, Manning is lucky to have escaped more serious injury when his knee was twisted awkwardly when sacked in an Aug. 24 exhibition loss to Minnesota. But when the Colts practiced last Monday, a brace-wearing Manning still inserted himself with the first-team offense during a seven-on-seven drill.
Asked what it would take to keep Manning from pushing himself so hard, Colts backup quarterback Mark Rypien said, "You've probably got to physically pin him down. That's the competitor in him."
Said Colts coach Jim Mora: "He's that kind of a guy _ a screwball."
