Aug. 29--Computer manufacturer Gateway Inc. said Tuesday it will close its Salt Lake City manufacturing plant by the end of October, laying off all 660 employees.
The planned shutdown is part of a restructuring that will see the nation's No. 4 maker of personal computers lay off about 5,000 employees, or roughly one quarter of its global work force.
Gateway said the layoffs, including those in Salt Lake City, will help it save $300 million and reverse the $523 million loss it posted for the first half of this year.
