La Scala's new production of Un Ballo in Maschera was booed on opening night, but by the fourth performance (May 20), it was working quite well, and there was much to enjoy musically. The orchestral playing under Riccardo Muti's baton was consistently beautiful: from the opening prelude onward, the phrasing sounded right in every nuance, and the tempos were well chosen throughout. All that was missing was deep emotional involvement: the love duet lacked abandon, and the orchestral underlining in the lot-drawing scene in Act III seemed calculated for effect rather than felt inwardly.
The cast was a good one, though Ofelia Sala's Oscar lacked charm, her voice proving efficient but uningratiating. Salvatore Licitra, on the other hand, was much more impressive as Riccardo than as Manrico a few months earlier. He sang solidly throughout, with attractively burnished tone, good diction and a rousing close to "Si, rivederti Amelia" in Act III.
