Alexander Borodin's melding of text to music is far more specific, less generic than that of many of his contemporaries, and his vocal lines are always grateful. But through much of this disappointing program, his melodic gifts seem in abeyance. The folk-derived contours of "Pride" are characteristic, and one recognizes the composer's "Oriental" style in the "Arabian Melody," despite a sluggish, "notey" tempo. Little of the rest sticks in the ear, and of course the vivid orchestral garb of his symphonic works is lacking; everything sounds pretty but hardly distinctive.
At least the singers inflect the music idiomatically and sensitively, and they're well matched to their particular assignments. Nikolai Okhomikov's solid bass "sit" in his seven songs is gratifying, his bottled-up vowels less so; even a row of repeated notes ...
