Rossini understood the particular appeal of treble voices in tandem, and in this recording, soprano Annick Massis and male alto Marco Lazzara join forces in some of the best duets from two of his opere serie, Semiramide and Tancredi. It is obvious from their unquestionable expressive rapport (and from the booklet photos) that Massis and Lazzara truly enjoy singing together.
From a strictly vocal standpoint, however, the pairing is not ideal. Massis's elegant soprano has uncommon beauty and ease in coloratura. Every note is squarely in the center of the pitch, with a bright, infectious shimmer. Lazzara's alto, by contrast, is wild and woolly, with harsh high notes and ungainly drops into chest voice on the other end.
