This latest CD from Ohio Light Opera is a live performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's Utopia, Limited (1893), the first recording to include the opera's complete dialogue. Conducted with verve by J. Lynn Thompson and featuring a generally strong cast, it serves the musical values of Utopia well, but the dialogue reveals the lack of coherence in the plot, and the Gilbertian wit is not often in evidence. Not one of their more familiar works, Utopia suffers from Gilbert and Sullivan's lack of communication during the later years of their collaboration. The score, however, has delightful moments, and music and lyrics are neatly wedded in a meltingly gentle love duet, a rousing minstrel parody and an amusing tenor scena about the ill effects of love on one's voice.
