SEATTLE _ Imagine having a disease no one wants you to talk about, and no one wants to hear about.

That's the plight of people with inflammatory bowel disease, says Lois Fink of Seattle.

But Fink is talking now, and so are some others who battle a malady that makes life miserable for upwards of 1 million Americans _ including 100,000 children _ but is typically avoided in genteel conversation.

The disease causes a chronically inflamed, and often intensely painful, digestive tract that has victims running constantly to the bathroom, or searching for one. A severe case can cause malnutrition, weight loss and, in children, delayed growth. It can virtually rule out activities where there's no bathroom close by.

Eventually, most sufferers require surgery to remove part or all of their damaged intestines. The secretiveness and embarrassment also…
