In absolute terms, Fort Worth Opera's performance of Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann on March 16 might best be described as serviceable, yet in comparison with typical work here of a few years past, it demonstrated the company's impressive progress. Bass Hall's 2,056 seats, a significant reduction from the previous venue, have induced the company to perform each production on four consecutive days. This makes some doublecasting necessary. Heading the cast this evening were tenor Michael Hayes, soprano Olivia Gorra and baritone Clayton Brainerd.
Gorra fared best. Her portrayals of Stella, Olympia, Antonia and Giulietta were so distinctive that she might have fooled some listeners into thinking she was different singers. Her Olympia was droll, though it took her a while to get into the role vocally after a tentative beginning. Otherwise, her singing was solid.
Brainerd was less successful as the villains Lindorf, Coppelius, Dr. Miracle and Dappertutto. He was certainly sinister enough, and his lower notes were firm, but he became vocally insecure in his upper register. Dappertutto's ode to the diamond was a mess. The baritone simply gave out, ...
